ESSA 2016-2017 School Year Transition Plan:  http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/es/essa1617transplan.asp

Background

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) signed into law on December 10, 2015, replaces the previous Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), also known as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001.  Sylvan Union School District will not be offering Public School Choice (formerly known as an NCLB Transfer) to new students or students promoting to middle school during the 2016–2017 school year.

Transition Plan for the 2016–17 School Year

California has developed a transition plan for the 2016–2017 school year that describes various alternative supports and services that are to be provided to eligible students, and is developing a new accountability system for the 2017–2018 school year.  Supplemental Educational Services (SES) will no longer be provided under ESSA.  Sylvan is currently developing criteria for alternative supports for students who qualify at the following schools:

  • Sherwood Elementary
  • Standiford Elementary
  • Sylvan Elementary
  • Woodrow Elementary

Choice

Under the ESSA, Sylvan Union School District will not be providing NCLB Public School Choice.  If a student is currently participating under NCLB Public School Choice Transfer, he/she is permitted to remain in their Public School Choice school until they complete the highest grade in that school.
