March 31, 2020 Update:

Mr. Eric Fredrickson Selected as Finalist for Superintendent Position in Sylvan Union School District

The Sylvan Union School District Governing Board has unanimously selected Mr. Eric Fredrickson as the finalist for Superintendent of the Sylvan Union School District, to replace Superintendent Debra Hendricks, who will be retiring in June.

The board will be voting to ratify the Superintendent’s contract at the March 31, 2020, regularly scheduled Board meeting.  Once the contract is approved Mr. Fredrickson, who is currently the Superintendent of the Grass Valley School District located in the Northern California city of Grass Valley, will be stepping into the role of Superintendent for Sylvan Union on July 1, 2020.

Sylvan School Board President George Rawe states, “Mr. Fredrickson was selected from an outstanding field of candidates.  He brings over 30 years of teaching, site level, and district level administrative experience to the position. His vast experience and credentials in K-12 public education are exactly what we need in Sylvan. He is known as a respected educational leader that has fostered strong partnerships with staff, parents and community members. He is also known to be a child-centered leader who is highly visible, approachable, and accessible.”

Mr. Fredrickson is a native of the central valley, born and raised in Merced, and a graduate of Merced High School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Fresno State University and his Master of Arts Degree in School Administration from the University of San Francisco.  Mr. Fredrickson spent ten years as a teacher and site administrator in the Clovis Unified School District before relocating to Northern California. His experience in Northern California includes site-level leadership as an assistant principal and principal at both the high school and K-8 levels. Over the last twelve years he has served as Superintendent in two K-8 school districts, Union Hill School District for two years and the Grass Valley School District for the last ten years.

Some of Mr. Fredrickson’s most recent and significant contributions as an educational leader include increasing student enrollment in his current district by more than 6% in a county with declining enrollment, the passage of an $18.8 million dollar general obligation facilities bond which is the first for the district in over 50 years, the establishment of a Joint-Use-Agreement with the City of Grass Valley to provide recreational facilities on the district campuses, bringing more than $2 million dollars of facility improvements to the district, the implementation of a highly desired Spanish Dual Immersion and Global Studies Academy (non-Charter) which is the first and only type of program in the community, and the successful implementation of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) initiative that has supported the district staff in improving student proficiency results and implementing effective academic and behavioral supports.

Mr. Fredrickson states, “After learning more about the Sylvan Union School District and meeting with the Governing Board, I feel that my skill set and years of experience align very closely with the current vision and mission of the Sylvan Union district. I highly respect Sylvan’s focus on providing a high-quality student-centered learning environment that supports high academic achievement, providing innovative programs such the Sylvan STEAM Academy, creating a school culture in which teachers collaborate together in Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s), and the implementation of Multi-Tiered System of Supports that provide both academic and social-emotional interventions for all students. These district practices and initiatives align so closely with the work I have been doing in my current district. I truly believe it is a great match and I look forward to being part of the Sylvan Union family.”
