6th Grade Camp/Outdoor Ed

Dear Sylvan Families,

Our sixth graders will have the opportunity to attend Foothill Horizons Outdoor Education School again this school year. As part of this experience, students will enjoy three nights and four days of an immersive experience that includes hiking and learning about nature. For families to learn more about what your child will experience at Outdoor Education, Foothill Horizons will be hosting an in person Open House on Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 10am to 2pm. View the flier.

For families who are not able to make the in person Open House, please access the following slide deck and video. If you have further questions, please check in with your child’s six grade teachers or ask at your school office. Other Links from Foothill Horizons include: Family Video In English, Family Video in Spanish, Family website (Currently Under Construction - SCOE will have this up and running soon)

Sylvan Union School District is responsible for the cost of transportation, admittance to Moaning Cavern Park, part of the lodging and educational supplies related to instructions at Foothill Horizons. We are asking families for a VOLUNTARY DONATION which offsets the total cost of the overall trip (slightly over $200 per student) along with the $10,000 Dream a Dream Grant that we received from Boyett. The donated amount of $150 covers part of the room and board (the actual cost is $176). Your donation helps support all students' attendance for this program. Every Middle School site will complete an all 6th grade community service project as part of the Boyett grant program (more information will be shared on this at a later date) instead of just individuals participating in the project. The projects will take place during the school day. The donated amount can be paid either in person or through the ASB online site. Please use this link https://bit.ly/SylvanCamp23-24 for online payments. If you would like to make a payment in person at the school, please go to the front office. If you are sending the donation/contribution with your student, their classroom teacher will provide a specific time for the student to pay at the student store. Sylvan Union School District understands that finances can be stretched thin for families, especially at the beginning of a new school year. This program is available to all students regardless of a family’s ability to donate.

As part of the CDC guidelines for overnight camps and the CDPH guidelines for schools, Foothill Horizons
has the following safety requirements in place:
  • Mandatory Health Check prior to attending the Field Trip
    • Temperature Check
    • “How are you feeling?”
  • Any student who returns home from Outdoor Education and tests positive for COVID should report the positive test to their school office for reporting to Outdoor Education.
Specific information about camp dates for your child’s school and class as well as due dates for family monetary contributions for Outdoor Education will be coming soon from your school site. We are excited that our 6th grade students have the opportunity to attend this camp again and experience all that Foothill Horizons has to offer.

Sincerely,

Amber Wethern
